15 Her Darkness

Once in Kroger, we got to work. With everything on our list, it didn’t take long to fill up the cart. We got three of those giant, thirty-five pound bags of cat food, so that took up a lot of room right there. Annabeth suggested we do multiple passes as the car could hold a lot more than just one cart’s worth of groceries. We thought about filling two carts at the same time, but Annabeth vetoed that idea. We needed to be mobile in case we were attacked. Our first pass was for dry goods, stuff that could sit in the car and wouldn’t spoil while we went back for more.

Everything felt normal. I didn’t see or feel any magic other than ours. Annabeth was listening for anything, and she said we were all clear. The only thing off about our first run was the size of our cart. It was stuffed. We had crap on the bottom rack, stuff hanging on the sides, and mounded up on the top. It was so embarrassing.

We loaded it all into the car and went back for more. This time we happened to go by the section with clothing. It was a bit strange having clothing and other stuff in a grocery store, but this was one of the new Kroger stores where they were trying to be more like Walmart. The clothing didn’t interest me, but I happened to notice a nice cloth backpack and thought of Bermuda. He wanted to come through the portal with me and hang out during training, but there wasn’t any way he could run the distance on his own. So I carried him, but it was awkward for both of us. Maybe he could sit in a backpack and enjoy looking around while I did all the running? It was worth a shot, so I added it to the cart.

We were halfway through our second pass, when I felt something. I stopped, switched over to magic sight, and scanned for trouble. Nothing. Annabeth listened, but didn’t hear anything out of the ordinary. We kept going, but at a more cautious pace. We finished our second pass, and thankfully, checked out with no problems.

We still had room in the car and stuff on our list, so we headed back for the third and final pass. That’s when I felt it again. There was a touch of magic in the air. Annabeth tilted her head to listen, and this time she heard something. She said it sounded like a murmur of voices, like there were several people talking in another room. It wasn’t loud, but she certainly heard it.

On high alert now, we started rushing to get the final items on our list. These were the perishable items, like milk, cheese, and ice cream. I suggested we just abandon the cart and head to the car, but Annabeth wanted to get everything. She said we didn’t know for sure there was danger yet, and we really needed some of the stuff.
